Forstner bits are primarily intended to produce clean flat bottom holes or recesses in carpentry in a similar way to hinge boring bits. Indeed they can be used for this application, but are best suited to drilling hard and soft woods rather than MDF or chipboard.
Clean Flat Bottom Holes
These wood drilling bits have only a very short central guiding point, but are highly effective in creating a clean exact finish with a short shank and highly rigid profile to prevent unwanted movement. Larger sizes work well when used with a fixed machine like a drill press, while smaller sizes can be used in normal electric and battery powered drills.
Saw Tooth Type for Rapid Chip Removal
Made from quality high carbon steel, Astra's Cutting Edge forstner bits are available with a ¼" hex shank suitable for quick release holders. A range of sizes from 15mm to 51mm is available, as well as sets including larger sizes popular with wood turners. Our larger diameter forstner bits are the saw tooth variation, providing fast cutting and rapid chip removal.
