Selecting the right workwear for your trade

Many trades have similar requirements when choosing workwear.

All need the basic requirements such as durability, comfort and safety, with consideration for winter or summer months, working outside or inside, lightweight or robust materials, insulating materials or garments incorporating high visibility.

If clothes are not functional or practical for the task to be performed then this creates a position in which the worker may be unable to perform their job comfortably, easily, safely or professionally.

For example, in certain jobs, such as where a lot of bending and kneeling is required (carpet laying, tiling, plumbing, etc.) choosing trousers that have reinforced knees or pockets to accommodate kneepads would be beneficial. If the incorrect trousers are used the worker may be more at risk of knee injury and the trousers would wear prematurely. Also, a looser fit will make bending and kneeling easier and more comfortable and the addition of some tool pockets and loops will aid the worker in performing the task in hand.

Things to consider when choosing workwear:

  • Material - There are many options available, so take into consideration whether they have been pre-washed (if a natural textile) as these usually have a soft hand feel and are often more comfortable.
  • Size - Correct fit is important to ensure free movement with no restrictions (see our size guide section).
  • Colour - Very much a personal choice, but keep in mind that lighter colours reflects the heat (better for the hotter months) and darker colours retain heat. Unfortunately, light colours will also show dirt and stains more.
  • Weather - Winter conditions: snow, rain, wind, cold - look for the workwear that gives you the required protection, i.e. waterproof, water-resistant, wind-proof, insulated, lined rather than unlined, "breathable" materials suitable for layering to allow moisture/sweat to wick away from the body (see section on layering clothes).

Summer conditions: heat, sun and lighter rain - chose more lightweight materials, "Stay-Dri" T-shirts, shirts, consider shorts if appropriate for tasks and a lightweight outer layer. Some clothing now offers ultra-violet protection for workers exposed to the sun.
  • Style – This is an individual preference, but ensure the style has the appropriate functions for your job.
  • High Visibility Requirements - Essential for areas where there is traffic movement inside or outside, i.e. warehouse, factory, road maintenance and railways, etc.
  • Function Options - Of which there are many, see below our recommendations for specific trade.

Various Trades & Recommendations

Carpenters, electricians, dryliners or any other frequent tool users would find the following useful:

  • Multiple Tool & Utility Pockets
  • Hammer Loops
  • Wide Belt Loops to Accommodate Work Belts
  • Ruler Pockets

Plumbers, tilers, carpet layers and other tradesmen who spend time on their knees would benefit from:

  • Double Front Reinforced Knees on Trousers
  • Pockets to Accommodate Knee Pads

Builders & bricklayers and other tradesmen working outside in cold conditions:

  • Wider leg openings to allow trouser to fit over boots or shoes (some with zip openings at hem)
  • Rib knit storm cuff in sleeve
  • Blanket, quilted or nylon linings
  • Bodywarmers for better mobility

Generally speaking, choose the clothing that suits you and your working environment and you can't really go wrong!
