The Stabila Type 196 level is made from extra strong but lightweight metal alloys and features reinforcement ribs that also make the level easier to handle. The level has two milled measuring surfaces, along both the top and bottom sides of the level, which ensure that the level rests flat against surfaces. There are also two rubber gripping holes making the level quick and easy to position.

The level has twin vertical vials to ensure even more accurate measuring, and also has a single horizontal vial. This horizontal vial has a viewing angle of up to 300 degrees and can also be used for overhead measurements by turning the level upside down. Impact resistant anti-slip stoppers at both ends prevent the level from slipping during use and provide good shock-absorption in the event that the level is dropped. These end caps can also be removed, for instance to allow the level to lie on narrow edges or to mark right into corners.
